Local Governments are Vital to the Long-term Health of the Bay
The Center for Chesapeake Communities works to assist local governments in their efforts to plan for growth and development and the protection of their own natural resources and the Chesapeake Bay. Providing tools, techniques, and technical assistance opportunities, the Center supports local government watershed initiatives.
The Center addresses concerns of jurisdictions that are large or small, rural or urban, developed or developing. It is committed to informing, educating, training, and assisting local governments in the protection of local natural resources and the Chesapeake Bay.
Local governments are integral partners in the protection and restoration of the Chesapeake Bay. When facing the challenges of pursuing partnerships in the Bay effort, local government officials often cite lack of technical expertise and financial resources as an issue to be addressed.
The Center for Chesapeake Communities responds to those local government needs. Recognizing the value of expanding the pool of resources and providing a single point of contact for technical information and training on natural protection, the center will help link local governments to the Chesapeake Bay.
Local governments in the Chesapeake Bay watershed provide unique contributions and resources to the protection of the Bay and will contribute even more given the tools to do so.
Local natural resource protection polices not only help protect the Chesapeake Bay, they also make long-term economic and social sense.
The restoration and sustained protection of the Chesapeake Bay will require the synergistic efforts of over 1,650 local governments in the watershed.
All Chesapeake Bay protection and restoration efforts are local.
The philosophy of the Center for Chesapeake Communities is based on the central principle of sustainable development: economic, social, and environmental goals can be achieved simultaneously if systems, policies, and procedures are designed to work inter-dependently.
This philosophy drives the decisions and practices of the Center when assisting local natural resources and the Chesapeake Bay.
